‘Doldrums’ music festival set to liven up deep winter in Ottawa

Lucas MacKenzie says he has fond memories of last summer’s festivals in Ottawa — Elvis Costello at Jazzfest, Death from Above 1979 and Jane’s Addiction at Bluesfest. He even played Bluesfest for the first time with his band New Teeth. Then, in winter, he became discontented.

MacKenzie says he has “seen a void” in live entertainment in Ottawa at this time of year, so he’s launching a new, small festival, to debut this week. The Doldrums Winter Music Festival runs Feb. 23 to 26 at three clubs in the city centre, Raw Sugar, Cafe Dekcuf and the Rainbow. “Like its name suggests, Doldrums was born out the stagnancy of an Ottawa winter, and aims to restore those connections between artists, fans and friends so often strained this time of year,” MacKenzie says.
